Playing video from your camcorder on your television is a rather simple process if you have all of the necessary cable(s) and a little bit of know-how. This tutorial will work for just about any type of camcorder, including older camcorders, high-definition (HD) camcorders, and brand new models.
Essential Items:
A camcorder (of course!)
Television with either RCA, S-Video, or HDMI inputs (most TVs nowadays will have at least one of the three)
The proper cable(s) to coincide with the TV inputs (this may have been included with your camcorder)
Step 1:
Find out what type of inputs your TV has by locating them either on the front of the TV (most likely covered by a panel) or on the rear of the TV. Almost every TV will have RCA inputs, which are a set of three jacks usually colored yellow, red, and white. Most TVs have an S-Video input as well, and it will be labeled as so. HDTVs will have HDMI inputs which will give you the best quality video and sound possible.
Note: If you are trying to watch high-definition video on an HDTV from your HD camcorder, you must use an HDMI cable in order to maintain the HD resolution.
Step 2:
Flip through your camcorder’s manual, or just inspect the camcorder itself, to find out what kind of outputs it’s equipped with. These outputs may be concealed by a panel or cover, depending upon the camcorder model. It will either have RCA, S-Video, or HDMI outputs (or a combination of the three) that will correspond with your TV’s inputs. Keep in mind that in order to get the best quality sound/video possible on your TV, you should choose to use HDMI first, S-Video second, and RCA third.
Step 3:
Once you’ve found your camcorder’s outputs, use the correct cable to connect the camcorder to the corresponding input on your TV. For example, if your camcorder only has an RCA output, plug the RCA cord into the camcorder and then connect the three-plug end of the cord into your TV, making sure to match up the colors (yellow: video, red/white: sound).
Note: If you decide to connect using an S-Video cable, you must also use the red and white RCA cables in order to get sound. S-Video cables provide much better video quality than the yellow RCA cable provides.
Step 4:
Once the cables are connected to both the camcorder and the TV, you’re ready to start watching some videos. Make sure your camcorder is in “viewing mode” rather than “recording mode” and just hit Play to start watching the videos on your TV. Use your camcorder’s controls to rewind and fast forward. You will most likely have to find the correct channel on your TV by pressing the “TV/Video” button on your remote or the TV itself – much like you have to do when watching a DVD with your DVD player.
That’s all there is to watching videos stored on your camcorder on your TV. If you have any trouble viewing video on your TV, go back and double check your connections and make sure you have the cable(s) connected to the correct input/output.
