Sony today introduced two new alpha cameras (models SLT-A55V and SLT-A33) that adopt Sony’s newly-developed Translucent Mirror Technology, which achieves the highest-level of auto focus speed for both still image and movie shooting. The new Sony digital SLR camera models offer continuous phase detect AF during 10 fps high-speed shooting and full HD movie shooting.

Both capable of shooting full HD video, the A55 has 16.2MP and the A33 14.2mp. The two models also share a 3-inch free-angle LCD between them, along with the usual Sony camera features of 3D Sweep Panorama (a personal favorite of mine), Auto HDR and multi-frame noise reduction.

Check out the details below for the A55 and A33, which are on sale in October and September for $750 and $650 respectively for bodies-only, and $850 and $750 for the bodies plus 18-55mm zoom lens.

Full-resolution shooting at up to 10fps with precise AF tracking
Ground-breaking Translucent Mirror Technology allows high-speed shooting with the a55 at up to 10fps (a33: 7fps) in Continuous Priority AE mode. This represents the world’s fastest burst continuous AF shooting performance of any interchangeable lens camera with an APS-C size sensor.

A newly developed 15-point phase-detection autofocus system assures rapid, accurate AF tracking, keeping even moving subjects in sharp focus during continuous shooting. This enables the a55 and a33 to capture split-second action or fleeting nuances of expression with portrait subjects.

World’s first Quick AF Full HD movie shooting 1
The large sensor size Exmor™ APS HD CMOS Sensor inside both cameras lets photographers capture stunning, cinematic HD video footage with beautiful background defocus (bokeh) effects.

The a55 and a33 also mark the debut of Quick AF Full HD movie shooting. Translucent Mirror Technology enables AVCHD 1080i video shooting with smooth, precise phase detection AF tracking of moving subjects. Real-time video image preview is now possible via the viewfinder – in contrast with DSLR cameras where the raised mirror prevents light from reaching the optical viewfinder during video shooting.

Effortless composition and image viewing
The a55 and a33 enable exciting new possibilities for framing and viewing highest-quality video and still images. Already prized by step-up DSLR users and enthusiasts alike, Sony’s Quick AF Live View system is now more effective than ever. High-resolution live image preview is teamed with uncompromised phase detection AF performance – even with rapidly-moving subjects.

Tilting and swivelling freely (to maximum 270 degrees) for comfortable framing at any shooting angle, the bright 7.5 cm (3.0″) (16:9) Xtra Fine LCD offers superb detail and contrast.

There’s also a precision electronic viewfinder with 1.15 million dot resolution that delivers a clear, bright image with 100% frame coverage. Adjustments to exposure, depth of field and colour can be previewed instantly, either in the viewfinder or on the LCD. Effortless composition is aided further by switchable grid line in the finder and LCD screen, plus a new digital levelling gauge.

Enriched creative possibilities
The a55 and a33 are compatible with the full range of over 30 A-mount interchangeable lenses and offer SteadyShot INSIDE. This in-body image stabilisation system provides up to 4 exposure steps of anti-shake correction when shooting handheld.

Both cameras also feature 3D Sweep Panorama, allowing photographers to capture detail-packed extra-wide panoramas with a huge field of view. 3D panoramas can be enjoyed on any compatible 3D HD television. The SLT-A55 is also the first ? camera by Sony with integrated GPS, allowing automatic geo-tagging of images and video clips.

The new-generation Exmor™ APS HD CMOS Sensor inside both cameras supports a sophisticated range of digital image compositing and processing functions. This gives even greater artistic possibilities to beginners and photo enthusiasts alike.

Auto HDR is now refined further compared with previous-generation ? models. Data from a burst of three frames at bracketed exposure values is automatically combined, creating a single image with extended highlight and shadow detail Multi-frame Noise Reduction ‘stacks’ a high-speed burst of six frames, creating a single low-noise exposure that boosts effective sensitivity as high as ISO 25600.

The new cameras accept both Memory Stick PRO Duo™ (including Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo™) and SD (including both SDHC and SDXC formats) media (all sold separately).  Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo HX 30MB per second transfer rate offers the best performance during cameras’ continuous shooting mode or when transferring the data to another media.

The new a55 and a33 Single Lens Translucent mirror cameras by Sony are available from September 2010.

Canon on Tuesday announced two new professional level, high-end camcorders, the Canon XF105 and XF100. The new models are Canon’s smallest professional camcorders to date, and are designed for standalone use and as companions for the XF305 and XF300 camcorders.

As Canon continues to make video a priority, the new models add to its already substantial line of video recording cameras and camcorders.

Each camcorder weighs less than three pounds, a number much more convenient for things like news and mobile filmmaking than some of Canon’s other camcorders. They each have a 3.5-inch, 920,000 dot LCD screen with a built-in waveform monitor to help ensure accurate exposure. Both also have a 10x zoom lens, and shoot with the same XF Codec that Canon’s other professional camcorders use.

The two camcorders feature MPEG-2 4:2:2 50Mbps recording, and the ability to shoot in high-definition 3D by pairing two of the camcorders and using built-in software to align the camcorders for optimal shooting. There’s also a low-light, infrared feature that Canon says allows HD video to be shot in complete darkness.

Unique to the higher-end XF105 are HD_SDI output and gunlock in/ZMTPE time code terminals. Both can record at multiple bit rates and resolutions, and use variable time rates for shooting in slow and fast motion.

The XF105 and XF100 will both be available in the first quarter of 2011. Pricing was not announced.

With improved navigation and additional filter features, this video editing software is more user-friendly and hard to beat. Well, I’m not a video professional but I do run into chopping some videos together every now and then for work. I also am looking for a clean workflow to downsize the source videos so I can archive them. I’m looking for some advice on workflow and how to achieve the desired results.  Money is not really an issue with software as most of this is for work and I have a decent budget to do these types of things. I also have access to some nice machines to crunch the videos.

I am basically looking for an easy workflow that does a few things:
1. Be able to transfer these videos in the correct aspect ratio into a much smaller WMV container that can be streamed on our intranet for work
2. Be able to easily transfer these videos into a little smaller container for archiving, so they take up about half to 1/3 the space

The following tutorial will guide you through how to import MTS footage to Pinnacle Studio Ultimate friendly format using Pavtube AVCHD to Pinnacle Studio Converter. You can download AVCHD MTS  to Pinnacle Studio Converter (trial version) for trial.I really liked how Pavtube trial version provided full access to the functions of the software. It allowed me to test the conversion quality.

Converting MTS to MPEG-2, MPEG-4, AVI, DV, WMV and other formats that Pinnacle Studio handles well:
Step 1. Import MTS  to  AVCHD to Pinnacle Studio Converter.
Transfer .mts files from camcorder to computer via USB cable. Run Pavtube AVCHD to Pinnacle Studio Converter as the best MTS converter, and click the “Add” button to load .mts videos.

Step 2. Set Pinnacle Studio friendly output format.
Click “Format” bar to determine output format. Follow Common Video-> AVI Video (*.avi). To maintain HD quality, you may choose HD Video > WMV HD(*.wmv) for converting MTS to 1080/30p WMV with WMV3 as video codec. The MTS converter also keeps the 5.1 channels by default.

You can also choose MPEG, MP4, DV as output format, which are available in Common Video, HD Video and DV tab of MTS AVCHD to Pinnacle Studio converter. The converter also works with AVCHD footages shoot by various AVCHD camcorders, like Panasonic TM700, Sony HDR-CX110, Canon HF S200, and so on.

Step 3. Determine you video resolution, bit rate, frame rate, etc
Click “Settings” if you’d like to customize advanced audio and video parameters like Video Codec, aspect ratio, bit rate, frame rate, Audio codec, sampling rate, bit rate, channels. Notice that you can not “convert up” video quality. If you selected HD Video in Step 2, we advise you to adjust the A/V parameters to be the same with source MTS footage so as to bear least quality loss at proper file size. You may check the A/V parameters of original video in preview panel, and it will display the video information when you select an item. In case it displays no information, please click the “《” sign. To cut down file size, you may set down video bit rate, the lower bit rate you set the smaller file size you get. Do not forget to click “OK” to confirm your settings. Then type in a desired output location in the “Output” box.Check the option “Merge into one file”, you can join multiple MTS files  into one file for conversion. The deinterlacing option allows you to convert interlaced MTS file into a non-interlaced form, so that you can enjoy a better and clearer video effect.

Step 4. Convert AVCHD  MTS to Pinnacle Studio friendly video format.
Click the convert button under the preview window, the MTS to Pinnacle Studio converter will start converting MTS for importing to Pinnacle Studio. Soon after the conversion is finished, just click “Open” button to get the generated files and edit mts file with Pinnacle Studio .

Sony’s new Translucent Mirror cameras look like a D-SLR, feel like a D-SLR, and produce D-SLR image quality, but since their mirror boxes lack the traditional D-SLR components, they do not technically fall into that category.

Translucent Mirror cameras do come with a host of benefits, but there’s a caveat.

For many, the new Sony Alpha a33 and a55 Translucent Mirror cameras offer a feature set that could be more compelling than Sony’s D-SLR counterpart, the Sony Alpha a560. The new Sony’s have access to the phase detection auto-focus sensor, which lets them deliver extremely fast auto-focusing. The key is that you can get this fast, continuous auto-focusing no matter what mode you are in; specifically burst shooting (10 frames per second on the a55) and HD video recording. The Sony a560 D-SLR can auto-focus just as fast, but not in burst mode. It also does not auto-focus during video recording.

The a33 and a55 Translucent Mirror cameras are also more compact and weigh less than the a560 D-SLR. Sony said the Translucent cameras are 23 percent smaller and 26 percent lighter than last year’s Sony Alpha a550 D-SLR, the predecessor to the a560. Though the new devices have smaller builds, image quality is identical since they have the same size image sensor; APS-C.

The overall feature set is nearly identical on a33 and a560 cameras: HD video capture (1080i60 AVCHD), gorgeous high-resolution articulating, 3-inch LCD (921,600 dots), and 14.2-megapixel captures. Price is identical too: both will sell for $650 (body only) and $750 (with an 18-55mm lens).

So why wouldn’t you be interested in the Translucent Mirror cameras over the D-SLR? Here’s the catch: there’s no optical viewfinder. In place of the optical viewfinder is an electronic viewfinder (EVF), which is a tiny high-resolution LCD (.46-inch with 1,152 000 dots). An EVF is not for everyone. I personally can’t stand them, but times are changing, and many people might not mind the EVF or prefer to use a camera with a large, 3-inch LCD.

My only gripe with the a560 D-SLR is that it completely lacks any auto-focus during video recording. While it’s not technically possible for it to access the fast phase-detection auto-focus sensor while recording video, Nikon has released the 31000 D-SLR, which can continuously auto-focus during video recording – but not as the Translucent Mirror cameras. It does so by processing image information from the main, large image sensor.
